Summary/Abstract: The subject under scrutiny in this research paper is renting private apartments to tourists arriving to Poznań for short- or long-term stay. A survey was conducted to clarify whether the apartments can be an alternative to a traditional hotel room, for which they are the best solutions, how these establishments operate, how many private apartments there are in Poznań, how they are equipped, what services they provide and where they are located. There were analyzed all 104 private apartments located in Poznań and announcing their offer in 2012 at Booking.com. In the development study a general population was involved – the whole population sample. Questionnaire survey was attended by 59 apartments. The results of this study show that private apartments are the perfect complement of accommodation in the tourist destination and certainly are alternative to hotels especially for individual tourists. Despite the fact they have a very good, downtown location, which provides easy access to major tourist attractions and the price for a night is much lower than in hotels of the same standard, they cannot boast additional, sophisticated amenities and services that provide hotels.
