ESTABLISHING A DEMOCRATIC CITY-STATE

Summary/Abstract: Based on the evident excellent preservation of the archaic funerary statues (kouroi and korai and other funerary monuments) this paper addresses the social structure of the ancient city state of Athens during a period in which, for the first and perhaps last time in this world, full and direct democracy was instituted. It is concluded that the burial of these monuments reflects a situation in which at least those many members of the aristocracy involved in the democratic restructuring, obeying new regulations, buried the monuments of their ancestors in order to protect them and to avoid provoking.
