Summary/Abstract: With the environmental crisis deepening, and the sword of Damocles hanging over humankind, the views of the great on nature are increasingly becoming a signpost of sorts pointing to the way out, to what should be done to extricate ourselves from the crisis. This paper deals with Johann Wolfgang Goethe, the great German writer, and his attitude to nature. Nature will not be viewed through an analysis of his verse and other artistic expression, which would take us down a long road, considering how extenssive and diverse his opus is. Instead, the paper will reflect on nature as a regular topic of conversation between the famous writer and his secretary, Erik Ekermann. It can be said without hesitation that Goethe liked to talk about nature, and that he had made a long and comprehensive study of it. He was not carried away by emotion and poetic inspiration, but moved by reason and study.
