Summary/Abstract: Developmental Trends in Matrimonial Relations in the Western Europe and Slovakia. The position and meaning of the institute of marriage in human history, especially in its modern and postmodern phase interested the author of this paper who has studied developmental tendencies in matrimonial relationships in the European context. The author points to two demographic upheavals in the population´s behaviour of European matrimonial partners. In 1945 to 1950 natality increased and also nuptiality rose. However since 1965 the birth-rate has suddenly fallen and so has the marriage-rate since the seventies, the frequency of new marriages after separations has been decreasing, ever more frequently free partner relationships have been occured. Such discredit of the institute of marriage is not typical for the Slovak population. The causes of this different matrimonial behaviour of Slovak partners are investigated by the author in the last section of the paper. Sociológia, 1995, Vol. 27 (Vol. 5-6: 347-353)
