Summary/Abstract: The article deals with an important (topical) issue of phonetic and morphological fitting (adaptation) of borrowings, to be more precise, of so-called international words to the system of the standard Lithuanian language. It is stated that codification of some borrowings in the standard language in some cases has lost the touch with both the tradition of the past and the usage of the living language. Sometimes this process is too much orientated towards foreign languages (increasing number of inflexible nouns, unnaturally pronounced words, and etc.) instead of natural internal tendencies of the native language, its usage and development. This causes the situation when some suggestions of dictionaries, grammars and normative publications are artificial and either partly or fully unrecognised in the usage. The suggestion to bring the principles of the adaptation of borrowings closer to the Lithuanian language system and its living usage is based on the experience of compilation of "Dabartinės lietuvių kalbos žodynas" (Dictionary of modern Lithuanian) since the eighties of the last century.
