Summary/Abstract: The paper gives a short overview of tendencies of using the dash, which is considered a punctuation mark; and the hyphen, which falls within the area of spelling rules. The overview covers a period from Rygiškių Jonas (Jonas Jablonskis) Lietuvių kalbos gramatika (A Grammar of the Lithuanian Language) published in 1922 up to now. The paper provides a number of cases of using the above marks, which are of ultimate importance for the present-day written language. The usage peculiarities of the hyphen are given more attention, since it is likely to cause more problems for those who write. There are some suggestions made as to how to improve the rules specifying the use of the above two marks.
