The Degree-Gradually

Summary/Abstract: The word “degree” has several meanings in the dictionary. On their basis, concepts like quality, quantity, measure and their corresponding movements - gradual evolution and qualitative leap - are defined. The two movements are illustrated with examples taken from nature and society but also from the History of Philosophy. Thus, tradition, reform and revolution are defined. A special place is reserved to the analysis of the two senses of the gradual movement that are called “the slyness of the gradual”. One sense is about conscious and positive accumulation whereas the other is about deliberate but masked manipulation of different communities and their members. Romania’s historical experience from pre and post communist period is also invoked.
