Summary/Abstract: One of the big winners during the post-communist transition in Romania is the issue of the national minorities. There are two main reasons for including this issue as important ones on the political agenda of the Romanian parties. The first one is the external pressure on the Romanian government, especially from the European Union. The second is the political activity of internal actors, the Democratic Union of Hungarians mainly. The article is focused on the main evolutionary stages of the public policies concerning the national minorities in Romania and an analyses of the Roma minority situation.
