Summary/Abstract: The paper presents an outline of the situation of ethnic minorities in Britain and Ireland against the wider European context. The author defines the various meanings and aspects of belonging to, what he calls, the most vulnerable part of society and discusses the situation of minorities in the light of cultural traditions. The papers offers a glimpse on contemporary foreign policy and domestic ethnic problems and arrives at a conclusion that Britain’s multicultural legacy cannot but help in finding its role in the united Europe.
