Summary/Abstract: This article is dedicated to George Cosbuc a symbol of Romanian poetry, best known from Romanian schoolbooks as "the "poet of peasants". His personality and his place in the 19th century literary panorama in Romania are carefully observed. In Transylvania the native province of Cosbuc the natural spirit of European culture has always been present but in spite of this the number of literary productions was low in comparison with the other Romanian provinces Moldavia and Valachia. First the author focuses on Cosbuc's activity as a translator observing the manner in which his preferences dominated and shaped his life and development as a writer. Cosbuc's poems bear from his first masterpieces a mark of universality as he borrowed and adapted the great themes present in the European literatures. First being noted as a neoclassicist then showing characteristics of a late romantic Cosbuc is best known by his lyric of love.
