Summary/Abstract: The Stability Pact for South-East Europe (SEE) has brought an innovative approach to the practice of post-crisis support programmes. It is an instrument for conflict prevention and an attempt at a holistic approach to the social, political and economic reconstruction of the region. This is a unique form of an international initiative in which the roots of the conflict are also taken into account. Social, political, economic and security issues are addressed so that the ultimate perspective is the region’s accession to the EU. It is also promising that the programmes look upon the beneficiary countries as a comprehensive region, namely the ‘Westbalkan’. Built on the active participation of local actors, three Working Tables have been set up to deal with the political, economic and security dimensions of the reconstruction, with several cross-table initiatives. The focus of this article will be the progress of initiatives in the field of social and socio-economic development, with special regard to the Pact’s second year of operation.
