Summary/Abstract: Using the methodology of critical frame analysis, Ferree and Gamson’s article studies and compares the documents of the abortion debates in the USA and Germany between 1970 and 1994. Its theoretical starting point is Nancy Fraser’s model of injustice to different social groups. However, the authors expand this model to incorporate, besides the categories of redistribution and recognition, the two forms of power as conceptualised by Weber (authority and autonomy), and analyze these and their interactions in both countries. The study argues that, regarding the abortion debate, autonomy can be located in the governance of gender (i.e. in the possibility of women’s self-definition), whereas authority is expressed in the gender of governance (i.e. having a voice in policy processes concerning women). The authors point out that German women were more successful in the fight for political and social authority, but in general they did not manage to gain recognition; on the other hand, American women could attain a higher level of personal autonomy, however, for them, problems of redistribution result in injustice.
