Summary/Abstract: Burawoy’s programmatic speech relates to the line of debates on the role of science and the myth of pure science. In late modern societies, applying the very essence of modernity, sceptical reflexivity to science itself, a number of theoretical perspectives, and also scientific, intellectual and public movements questioned the possibility, the value position and social relevance of a functionally distinct pure science. In my paper I argue against the great divide between professional and public sociology suggested by Burawoy, and claim that public sociology is far from being in such a repressed position as Burawoy describes it. Finally, I illustrate my argument with my personal experience of the coexistence of public and academic roles.
