Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the process of shaping the attitude of sobriety in the youth. The specificity of the period of adolescence is presented, especially the changes in biological, cognitive, moral, social and emotional development as the psychosocial basis of man’s functioning. The analyzed questions are complemented by the issue of identity development taken from E.H. Erikson’s theory of ego development. The failure in solving the crisis of adolescence, experiencing emptiness of life, conflicts with parents and a strong need for identifying with a peer group favor excessive alcohol use. However, the influence of the environment does not necessarily have to be destructive. The paper presents Ruch „Światło-Życie” (Movement Light-Life) and Scouting, which in their programs undertake the task of promoting abstinence and provide an alternative to the use of psychoactive substances.
