Summary/Abstract: Friulian is the Romance variety spoken in the North-Eastern part of the Italian Peninsula, in a limited area in Northern Austria, Eastern Slovenia (Trieste), in the South of the Adriatic Sea and in the west of the Veneto region. Therefore, the dialect is used the provinces Goritza, Pordenone and Udine, which are part of the autonomous Friulian region of Venezia-Giulia; this area corresponds to the “historical Friuli”. In the context of the lack of a variety of a standard variety, the official variety is that of Udine. The article also discusses the linguistic characteristics of Friulian.
