Summary/Abstract: This article aims to briefly review the major foreign policy consequences generated on both sides of the Atlantic by the election of the new president of the United States-Barrack Obama. What kind of a foreign policy should the U.S. put forward? Which is the role of America in this brave new multipolar world? What should be the European answer? We argue that in a time of scarce economic and military resources, a time of strategic overextension, a neoconservative foreign policy is definitely not an option. The alternative seems to be the returning to the liberal institutionalism and the multilateralism of the 1990s as a way of doing business in the world: through the international institutions.
