Summary/Abstract: The very essence of Orthodox Christian values can be expressed in a simple sentence: personality is above everything else. For Orthodox Christians, there is nothing so valuable as the personality of God and the personality of man. These values cannot be subordinated to, or sacrificed for any other goals or values, even when these latter are considered highly relevant or sacrosanct. All the rest, politics, the state, science, technology, culture, should serve to bring about the full development of human personality. From this ontologico- anthropological conception follows the principle to which the Orthodox Church has adhered for the last two millenniums: the principle of maintaining balance and interdependence between God and man, soul and body, individual and community, one and many, local and universal. Orthodoxy is Church. The true Church cannot be identified with any single form of government. But when it comes to forms and principles of government, it is certain that the Orthodox Church prefers democracy, be it monarchy or republic, to any other form of government. When the State is democratic and truly committed to its law, then the Church can freely engage in its mission and activities.
