Summary/Abstract: The Greek word τὸ κητος has many meanings, all of them connected with miscellaneous water creatures. The didactic poem written by Oppian of Cilicia describes the inhabitants of the sea, κήτεα included. In "Halieutica" the noun τὸ κητος is used to design various animals. The article presents the usage and different meanings of this word in Oppian’s poem.
