Summary/Abstract: Wetlands are habitats of increasing importance throughout the world due to their rich biodiversity and relevance to wildlife in general, as the drinking water supplies are endangered and the desertification process threatens the delicate balance of water dependent ecosystems. These rare types of ecosystems are protected by specific international conventions such as Ramsar, but also by all the laws concerning biodiversity conservation and water pollution. Two wetlands in Sălaj have a protected natural area status: The Bog of Iaz and Cehei Pond. The Bog of Iaz is a 10 ha active raised bog site that harbors beside the usual peat moss habitat species such as the sundew, some unique entomofauna species in the country. Cehei Pond is a site of importance for water birds, especially as a passage, feeding and resting spot on their migratory routes, species such as the little bittern, the great reed warbler and the moorhen. Regardless of the wetlands protection status, all human activities should take into account management measures that protect their resources through sustainable development initiatives and raising awareness on the importance of their natural and cultural heritage. In collaboration with the Council of Salaj County, although with other institutions, Environmental Protection Agency of Sălaj County, tries to find opportunities, proposing projects and offering solutions to value the tourist potential of those two zones. Each year, on the 2nd of February - World Wetlands Day, the Environmental Protection Agency of Sălaj County runs activities of ecological education in schools, thus sensitizing the young generation with the aspects regarding the environmental protection and hoping that the future generations will have a friendly behavior towards the environment.
