A.R.Cz. and Linden Flower: The game is not over yet

Summary/Abstract: The emergence in 2011 of the independent artists Mihail Sjańkou (ARCz.) and Denis Limonoua (leader of the Linden Flower art group) was the cause of much controversy and debate, involving both audiences and the artistic community. The artists’ origins (ARCz is from Zhodina, Denis Limonou from Mogilev) raise the question of why autonomous, original artistic phenomena arise in the provinces? Do artistic strategies – motifs of death and violence for ARCz and radical artistic gestures (artivism) for Limonoua – testify to the uniqueness of Belarusian contemporary art? The author presents the works of the artists as a cultural phenomenon, and situates them in their socio-political context.
