Summary/Abstract: Pavel Pryazhko, a young Belarusian writer, has been called a phenomenon, but only, unfortunately, of the Russian theatre. His plays are staged in various theatres in Russia (from Moscow to the Urals), provoke discussion, and are studied by scholars of literature and theatre. Pryazhko’s work not only marked a new beginning in Belarusian drama, but also influenced playwrights and new modern theatrical forms in Russia. Characteristic of Pryazhko’s style is its minimalism. His characters speak ungrammatically because – as their creator says – this is the face of reality. Key for the author is his desire to explore the boundary between truth and illusion in theatre. Pryazhko has found his own way to describe everyday life, as his art breaks with the traditional canons of dramatic theatre.
