Summary/Abstract: Formerly universities were institutions with a particular status, independent from the society and enjoying their aristocratic position. Constant change made life become more intensive, consequently, the previous position of universities became obsolete and universities were faced with the necessity to rethink their place in the society; this raises new expectations for universities. The article aims at brief presentation of university idea development and analyses the trends in the relationship development between university and society. No attempt is made to design any models on the basis of which the relation between university and society could be shaped, however, it pursues to present an overview of the development of these relations in the life time, providing guidelines about their possible perspectives and highlighting the importance of the existence of these relationships.
