Summary/Abstract: The article analyses educational and psychological foundations of vocational guidance in Lithuania. The results of the research show the period of 1918–1940 in the Lithuanian Republic witnessed the start of vocational orientation development on scientific grounds. Lithuanian Psychotechnical and vocational orientation society was founded that performed personnel selection, vocational suitability and vocational counselling questions and implemented this research into practice. Scientific discoveries of that time have not lost credibility and importance nowadays – under the conditions of rapidly changing labour market. In the period of 1940–1990, vocational orientation and counselling system was created in the whole country, oriented to the political order, planned economy and less concerned with learner needs and scientific theories of that time. Nowadays, the theory of vocational guidance, developed by L. Jovaiða, S. Kregþdë and their students is further developed at Vytautas Magnus University under the supervision of R. Lauþackas, K. Pukelis and their colleagues, is being popularised and implemented in Lithuania and in foreign countries
