Summary/Abstract: An attempt has been made to discover the historical roots of the folk game 'Eagle and Hen'. On the basis of the links of this game with the traditional customs, observed by young girls the author has tried to discover the archaic conceptions which lie at its roots, and thus to prove its origin as a ritual. The three-degree structure of the action in this game corresponds to three basic phases in the so-called transition rituals. The individual actions and images in the game and their very old symbolism also confirm these links. An analysis clearly shows that certain ideas are reflected in the game which are characteristic of initiation rites. This gives grounds for the supposition that the game in question resulted from these rituals and their desacralization, from giving them a new meaning and transferring them to the sphere of games.
