Summary/Abstract: Identity and Religion. Aspects of the Symbolic Construction of Identity. The mythical, symbolic and imaginative functions are schemes of a more profound dimension, that of the archetypal basis of the religious man. This archetypal basis is being actualized in the secularized forms of language that are typical for the modern man. It becomes a major component in shaping the individual and community identity. The importance of these structures becomes obvious when one realizes the role the images play in shaping the behaviors and the social reality. The ideologies, as dominant symbolic systems, play an important role for the life of modern man, in the understanding and the foundation of the symbolic forms. The ideologies attempt to provide the man with a complete vision of the real. Thus, the symbols performs the function of establishing roles of identity belonging to a political imaginary that both fade and integrate all forms of the sacred, no matter how diminished or far away from religion may they be.
