Summary/Abstract: The history of private life and family in the Romanian Ancien Regime, as well as the relationship between family members and their community still require further research at theoretical level and within case studies. An important avenue of research should concern less the politically powerful families but more the second and third rank nobles, who were part of solidarity and client networks, distributing and redistributing jobs and benefits. In this study the author uses the testaments of Matei Pârdescu, a boyar from Oltenia, and his wife Caplea as a departure point for gaining insight into their life, following several leads: the relationships between family members and their community; the economic and social ties that shaped their life together; the affectionate bonds; the highs and lows of marital life; the bonds that were created amongs relatives and friends; and the final dispositions of each spouse.
