Summary/Abstract: The “military revolution” brought major changes in European warfare during the early modern period. One of the first consequences was the increasing role of infantry and gunpowder in the outcome of battles. On the other hand the role of heavy cavalry was constantly decreasing, and thus the military role of the nobility. The influence of the “military revolution” expanded across Europe and beyond, but some regions maintained their particularities in warfare and military organization. Such was the case of the principality of Transylvania, were the nobility continued to play an important military role despite the elements of modernization that were being accepted. The Transylvanian nobles maintained a close connection with the military profession as they continued to fulfill their traditional obligation of personal military service. Weapons were also a part of daily life and their symbolism accompanied the noble in the essential phases of life. War and military life had a great influence on the written culture of the Hungarian and Transylvanian nobility imposing some specific literary subjects: war, military virtues etc.
