Summary/Abstract: Christian marriage established by God’s creation has numerous aims. According to Luther, marriage has three main goals. The first and the second ones consist in procreative function of marriage and mutual supporting of both spouses what was similar to the Catholic doctrine. The new dimension of Lutheran ethics was reflected in new attitude toward sexual drive. It is seen as a positive value only in the frame of marriage (matrimonium – remedium et medicina). Luther formed the third aim of marriage and described it as a carrying of cross (ferre crucem). It is related strictly to the theology of the Protestant Reformation and its important elements: the cross, the vocation, love and faith.
