Summary/Abstract: The official documents of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) which were published in recent years generally take a stance against euthanasia. It is worth noting that many of these writings against the so-called “active assistance in dying” or “killing on demand” have an ecumenical dimension, trying to unite Protestants and Catholics in a common struggle to uphold the inviolability of human life. Unfortunately, in 2014 the former chairman of the EKD, Nikolaus Schneider, gave quite a controversial interview in which he admitted that he will accompany his wife Anne (cancer patient) until the end, including also assisting in her suicide. Such views expressed by the president of the EKD, of course, provoked widespread discussion in Germany about the legalization of euthanasia and caused some confusion within the Evangelical community. Unfortunately, the new authorities of the Evangelical Church in Germany have not published so far, any official amendments or any documents confirming their teaching on the inadmissibility of euthanasia, which in this context appears to be quite serious negligence.
