Summary/Abstract: The subject dealt with in the article constitutes the opinions of the literates of the second half of the 18th century on various aspects of a widely-understood reading culture at that time. What is quoted here involves critical opinions of feature writers, poets and novelists on numerous needs and reading preferences of the receivers at that time though contradictory with their expectations. Comments of the people of culture at the era of Stanisław August Poniatowski on good and bad readers are the starting point for specifying the prints considered at that time to be lewd and mediocre, that is evaluated negatively in many respects. Specification also involves diversified means the writers in the era of Stanisław August Poniatowski used to discourage from reading works treated by them as priceless. They involve above all prints considered to be boring, badly‑written and besides, having a negative influence on a moral, spiritual and religious sphere of human life. Reflections made on the basis of the selected source material are confronted with the arrangements made in the course of the studies on reading competences and preferences of the society of the second half of the 18th century, as well as forms of repression towards prints for many reasons regarded as harmful.
