Public Opinion Polls under Conditions of Transitions

Summary/Abstract: Some essential similarities and differences between public opinion polls and sociological surveys are outlined in the beginning of the article. A conclusion is made on this basis that the former are a specific variety of the latter. Further on the author summarizes a number of characteristic aspects of the actual practice of public opinion polls in Bulgaria, and discusses the possibilities for their further expansion under the conditions of transition to parliamentary democracy and market economy. Some difficulties are also indicated — on the one hand, the insufficiency of financial means, on the other, the formation of an instrumental attitude to the polls themselves. In this relation the necessity is emphasized of maintaining the faith in public opinion studies and of not allowing any manipulations of public opinion studies and of not allowing any manipulations of data or data analyses.
