THE FRENCH MILITARIES IN KORÇA - SUPPORTERS OF THE NATIONAL ASPIRATIONS OF THE POPULATION (1916-1920)

Summary/Abstract: During the First World War, in 1916, in the region of Korçe was established a contingent of the French troops of the “Army of Orient” which withdraw from there after nearly 4 years, in May 1920. The author made object of his treatment the stand which took the militaries of this contingent, their commands, supporting the national aspiration of the population which inhabited this region. From this point of view this subject, says Prof. Çami, has not been treated before neither by French authors nor by Albanian ones, who, it goes without sying, as the most interested, were occupied with this problem more than the scholars of other countries. Mr. Çami after touching in the beginning the agreement reached in December 1916 and well-known in historiography, between the command of the French contingent and the representatives of the patriotic circles in Korçe, dwells on the essence of the problem which constitutes even an innovation in the field of historical studies. He treats the contradictions, which arose immediately after the signature of the agreement, between the diplomacy of Paris and the command of the “Army of Orient” which had authorised the signature of the agreement. Source of these contradictions became the content of the document, signed by the militaries, without taking preliminarily the approval of the politicians. In the here writing is treated the development of these phenomena both in the inner military and political plane and in the outer, the diplomatic one.
