Summary/Abstract: Different assessment programs, such as PISA, suggest that students between 10 and 16 years of age have difficulty understanding written texts. As part of the key competences established by the European Parliament, the competence in linguistic communication, and specifically, reading comprehension, is essential for the comprehensive development of students. Therefore, in this paper we will try to analyze the causes of the deficiencies in this skill and provide solutions that go through interdisciplinary reading instruction. To do this, we will review the cognitive processes that are carried out to understand a text and the methodological principles which should govern teaching reading strategies.
