Summary/Abstract: Translation problems arise because of semantic inadequacy in the process of translation. Adequacy of translation means not just exact rendering of referencial information, but also many other aspects of the original text: its stylistic features, various connotative shades of meaning, certain cultural aspects and even some formal characteristics of the original text. The article dicusses the ways of compensating semantic inadequacy in the translation of the novel “Three Men in a Boat” by Jerome K. Jerome into the Lithuanian language. It can be noticed that the translator of the novel should have knowledge about allusions linked to English culture, history, literature, some places, so that proper impression could be given to the reader. Therefore, all kinds of translatory transformations are allowed as long as they help to achieve this goal, i. e. make the translation text as close to the original as possible.
