Summary/Abstract: Translation of language etiquette formulas is a complicated process because of the country’s cultural traditions, social situations, peculiarities of social communication functions. The article discusses translation of greeting and parting formulas from English to Lithuanian in J. Galsworthy’s novel “The Forsyte Saga” and H. Fielding’s novel “Bridget Joanes: on the Edge of Reason”. It has been noticed that despite national politeness terms' colouring, the translators found the Lithuanian equivalents for all English greeting formulas. While searching for the equivalents of greeting formulas, the translators paid more attention to the nature of the speech act situation and intelocutors’ relation type than to the denotational meanings of the words in both the novels. Therefore in the translation of the English greeting formulas the pragmatic meanings’ change can be noticed: the formal and neutral register stamps have been changed to the formal ones. In the translation of the parting formula equivalents, the loss of the pragmatic meaning has been noticed due to the interlocutors’ relation levels in the chosen texts for analysis. In the translation of the novel „Bridget Joanes: on the Edge of Reason“ parting formulas have been chosen according to the same colloquial style. It is claimed that the translation of language etiquette formulas in a fiction text is related to the translator’s ability to feel the language etiquette, understand stereotypes’ fund existing in the Lithuanian and English language systems, an ability to choose the appropriate equivalents and creatively convey the registre and stylistic undertones.
