Summary/Abstract: The Lisbon Strategy, a plan for the economic development of the European Union accepted for the period of 2000-2010, intended to deal with the stagnation of economic growth in the EU. Its purpose was to make the European Union the most competitive knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010. However, even if some progress was made, the programme turned out to be a failure. In 2010 the Lisbon Strategy was replaced by new Europe 2020 strategy. It aims to guide the economy of the EU out of recession and to guarantee a high quality of life while raising employment, productivity and socioeconomic cohesion. The following article describes the background and the guidelines of the new programme.
