The genesis of ethnic self-consciousness in Eastern Belarus in the Middle Ages

Summary/Abstract: The author is trying to systematize data concerning ethnic consciousness in Belarus in the Middle Ages. In particular, he analyses the peculiarities of ethnical and religious consciousness in ancient Belarus, its combination with the names «Rus», «Lithuania», «White Rus», etc. The author separately reviews the transformation of consciousness of inhabitants of Belarus during the Renaissance that was connected with gradual transition from religious to ethnic identity. Аўтар спрабуе сістэматызаваць звесткі пра этнічную свядомасць Беларусі ў Сярэднія вякі. У прыватнасці, аналізуюцца асаблівасці этнаканфесійнай свядомасці даўняй Беларусі, яе спалучэнне з найменнем «Русь», «Літва», «Белая Русь» і г.д. Асобна разгледжана трансфармацыя свядомасці насельніцтва Беларусі ў перыяд Рэнесансу, што было звязана з паступовым пераходам ад рэлігійнай да этнічнай свядомасці.
