DEFENCE SYSTEMS IN LITHUANIA AND BELARUS: COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE

Summary/Abstract: Since gaining state independence, the paths taken by Belarus and Lithu¬ania have essentially diverged, among other things, in the field of security and defence. The Republic of Lithuania took its decision on membership in the European and trans-Atlantic institutions without delay and began im¬plementing the required reforms in order to become a fully-fledged NATO and EU member. Belarus, in the meantime, chose to integrate with Russia, a step that led to its return to the old policy of containment, which in general determines the trend in the reform of its military forces.
