Summary/Abstract: People have primarily thought of and foretold the future on the basis of various prejudices. However, in Scholasticism the debate on the future came to acquire a speculative colouring in teachings on predestination and free will, and on responsibility in the choice between good and evil. Scientific determinism, however, the forecasting and elucidating of future events, was carried out on the basis of the revealed laws. Scientific determinism had prevailed over the natural sciences, and moved into the domain of philosophy, society and the arts. Classical physics was understood as pure nature, and not as human intervention in nature. Modern science has now radically changed. Einstein’s general theory of relativity was a break with Newton’s absolute space and time. Quantum theory controverted causality on the threshold of the microcosmos. According to Heisenberg’s uncertainty theory, the position of an atom cannot be accurately determined by measurement, which was the downfall of determinism. It is impossible to refer to anything without seeing the human involvement in it. The moment we accept human freedom, the world and the future cease to be a pre-written book to us. Nor can that work be predicted in the infinite diversity of human will and the complexity of circumstances. There remains humanism, which is not only a moral stance but also a gnoseology, while humanist ethics unite reason and feeling in the attainment of human welfare.
