Summary/Abstract: The forty-five year history of the Pugwash movement is a kind of expression of the changing awareness of scientists of the new role of the sciences in the world of today. From being the originator of the lethal danger of nuclear war, science has discovered the existential threat to humankind arising from the increasing deterioration of the global environment. A heightened sense of responsibility for the fate of our vulnerable world led to scientists coming together to evaluate the true state of affairs in an unbiased manner and to identify precise methods of preventing potential major disasters. One of the most remarkable forms this has taken, the Pugwash Movement, has become prominent as a major precursor and initiator of international agreements on many of the modern world’s problems, and is widely regarded as a high-minded and beneficial humanist venture. Soon after the movement was founded in 1957, Pugwash began to extend its activities to Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the organization of the Sarajevo-based Bosnia Pugwash group.
