Summary/Abstract: motifs can be found in verbal as well as pictorial and action texts. motif analysis starts from a plot either deliberately constructed or apprehended by intuition. the plot can be represented by a comprehensive five-position structure consisting of [1] figure, [2] action, [3] reason, [4] goal, [5] circumstance. their combinations yield second-level motifs such as [1] + [3] = [6] character, [2] + [4] = [7] issue, [5] ⇒ [8] chronotope. Here the plot can be regarded as a third-level motif: [6] + [7] + [8] = [9] plot, which leaves us with a three-level hierarchy of motifs. if no plot can be constructed, there are no motifs. the plot-theme relationship does not belong to motif analysis as thematization can be applied to practically any element of the text.
