Summary/Abstract: In this paper I want to explore the particular aspects of a European civil society: reflexive relations between construction of European public sphere, formation of transnational collective identities and politicization of the EU. The exploration is based on the complementary approach towards the civil society concept. Such approach draws mainly inspirations upon Tocqueville’s social theory and Giddens’ theory of reflexive modernization. The paper claims that relationships between Europeanized public spheres, political identities and the politicization of the EU present an intricate and crucial conundrum of a European civil society. I want to argue towards four specific hypotheses: 1) formation of European public sphere and Europeanization of public spheres in Europe are synergic and parallel processes; 2) these processes could be interpreted as a form of re/politicisation of public spheres across Europe; 3) Europeanization of public spheres is conducive for forming transnational collective identities; 4) politicisation of the EU leads towards Europeanization of public spheres and collective identities.
