Summary/Abstract: This article presents the position of ischemic heart disease in cause-specific mortality of the elderly in Bulgaria. The last two decades of the 20th Century are covered. Some important differences of mortality regime of active age (15-64) and third age (65+) population are established: Active age Third age Population size Declining Rising General mortality Rising Stable Life expectancy At age 15 – declining At age 65 – rising Cardiovascular mortality - men Rising Stable - women Rising Stable Ischemic heart disease mortality - men Rising Stable - women Rising Stable Authors conclude that both the unfavorable impact of the worsening quality of life in transition to market economy and of massive emigration has not affected demographic characteristics of the elderly in Bulgaria. Ischemic heart disease mortality of this subpopulation is not an exception.
