Summary/Abstract: The Pascalian Wager as Way of Being. From Mathematics to Phenomenology. In his text discussing the wager on God’s existence, Pascal involves reason in a paradoxical manner. The limit situations (the wager cases) reveal the theme of infinity, transforming the analytical (thetical) reason into a digressive (thematical) one. In this way, the mathematical, theoretical dimension of the wager receives an existential one, as far as the concrete phenomenology of life is taken into consideration. “The mathematical game” becomes an “existential game”. Only in this way, man is preparing himself for assuming the authentic existential itinerary which makes possible the reception of the divine grace and faith in his heart. The wager must be an ongoing process, engaging man in assuming uneasily his own way of being. Ultimately, the act of “existing” and that of “wagering” become identical.
