The History of Social Services in Bulgaria during the 1920s -1950s

Summary/Abstract: The article follows the development of social services in Bulgaria from the 20’s to the 50’s of the XX century. This short span of time offers three different approaches to the social services. In the article they are distinguished by the type of interaction between the philanthropic organizations and the state and by the role that the family takes in the social service provisions. The kind and scope of social services are discussed as a consequence of the collaboration of the philanthropic organizations, the state, and the family in welfare delivery. The development of social services is studied by analysis of historical documents regulating social services as well as analysis of reports and articles issued in the official journals of philanthropic and statutory service delivering organizations.
