Summary/Abstract: The Estonian Literary Society was one of the major institutions of the local national movement in the second half of the 19th century. Its history has been recorded by F. Tuglas in his monograph Eesti Kirjameeste Selts (”Estonian Literary Society”) (1st ed. 1932). The present article supplies some new information on C. R. Jakobson taking the floor at the 1868 conference of South-Estonian parish schoolmasters and proposing the foundation of a new society. The author also publishes the first known version of the statutes of the Society (from Jakobson’s own hand), and explains how a photograph from Tuglas’s monograph, and the people on it, are connected with the Society.
