Summary/Abstract: The European Union is an association of economically varied states. In spite of many differences there are also “natural” groups to which the states with similar features belong. Discovering these sets is the primary objective of this study. The following were used as the grouping criteria of EU states in a cluster analysis: 1) increase in GDP compared to the previous year, 2) inflation rate, 3) unemployment rate, 4) public balance of the general government sector as percentage of GDP, 5) current account balance as percentage of GDP. The article analyzes the relations among 27 countries in three years (at equal, four-year intervals – 2001, 2005 and 2009). The changes occurring in the old (EU-15) and the new (EU-12) states were checked which would prove their “liking” for the remaining member states. The data have been taken from the Eurostat database.
