Summary/Abstract: The objective of this paper is to identify the main determinants of innovation in the service sector. The work towards this objective is divided into two phases – the first one is the provision of a background in the form of presenting the nature and character of innovation in the service sector, while the other – based on the statistics derived from the GUS survey performed within the framework of the international Community Innovation Survey (CIS) of 2008−2010 – is an analysis of the selected economic determiners of innovation in the Polish service sector. The types of innovation most frequently embarked on by the service sector organisations are the marketing and the organisational innovation. The measures are mainly introduced to meet the customer needs more efficiently, to open up new sales markets and to improve business performance through the reduction of administrative costs.
