Summary/Abstract: The present article reviews a passage from the Historia of Attaleiates concerning the armies which the emperor Romanos IV Diogenes assembled before his first campaign against the Seljuks (1068). It discusses the author’s accuracy in the use of the names of Scyths, but also extends the analysis to how other ethnic minorities are addressed in the Historia.
