The Medieval Velbazhd - in the center and/or periphery

Summary/Abstract: The text is considering some of the features of the middle-aged city Velbazhd, which are a result of a specific situations during couple of centuries. Through his long existence Kyustendil has gone through different stages . rough development, meridian, destruction and oblivion. The historical facts, however, cannot be missed . the town was a desired territory for the Byzantine empire, Serbia and Bulgaria through the whole Middle-aged history. Belonging to different empires, it is difficult to define whether the territory is a central city or a peripheral area. In the 14th century the Ottomans appreciated the advantages of the city and turned it into a center of a sandzak.
